MONTHLY POETRY SOIREES BECOME STAPLE IN DOWNTOWN DC
As Spoken Word literature sweeps the country, monthly poetry soirees become a literary staple helping to boost the Washington, DC Spoken Word Renaissance. Downtown Barnes and Noble sponsors the 3rd Thursday monthly event hosted by Poet-In-Residence, J.Joy (Sistah Joy) Matthews Alford.
(WASHINGTON, DC) A monthly poetry soiree has become the "poetry place to be" for Washington, DC spoken word artists, literary connoisseurs, poets, lyricists, and authors, at the Downtown Barnes and Noble, 555 12th St., NW. Verse, Vibes, and Bites. Hosted by Barnes and Noble Poet-in-Residence, J. Joy Matthews Alford, poetically known as Sistah Joy, and author of Lord I'm Dancin' As Fast As I Can, the monthly events offer a "Featured Poet", musicians, open mic opportunities, and an assortment of delectable "bites" available from the B & N café food. The exciting and spirit-filled evening is open to the public free of charge on each third Thursday night of the month from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Musical accompaniment is provided by Doc Powell on Djembe (African) drum, another popular staple in DC's cultural renaissance.
Poets interested in participating in the open mic may simply show up and sign up in the Café on any 3rd Thursday at 7 pm or contact Poetsistahjoy@aol.com or 202-246-0111 to become a featured guest poet.
