Halloween is always a fun time for kids and adults alike. Trick or treating, socializing, and pumpkin carving highlight the creative seasonal festivities of this Autumn holiday. Families carve pumpkins of all sizes as they prepare to celebrate trick or treating.Carving Giant Pumpkins, those weighing 500 pounds or more, has been has been an increasingly popular activity in those areas that grow these massive vegetables. A Giant Pumpkin of 500 pounds can easily measure approximately 35" across, and be 35"-40" long and stand 30" tall. The really massive giant pumpkins, those weighing greater than 1000 pounds, will be substantially larger in all these measurements. The current Worlds Record Giant Pumpkin was grown in New Hampshire in 2002 by Charles Houghton. This enormous specimen set a new world record weighing in at 1337 pounds. This world record pumpkin was sculpted into the World's Largest Jack-O-Lantern by Master Carver, Scott M. Cully. Pictures of the final sculpture can be found in the current issue of the Guinness Book of World Records on page 46.
This year a new concept in Giant Pumpkin Sculpting will be tried. The staff at Demers Garden Center, and Master Carver Scott M. Cully, will construct a Totem Pole like tower of giant pumpkins. Each pumpkin will have two or three Halloween faces carved into it. When the project is completed, verification of it will be submitted to the Guinness World Records in an effort to establish a new world record. The Guinness staff has been contacted and are aware of this attempt.
The public is invited to witness this event as it unfolds over Columbus Day Weekend. Construction of the Totem Pole of Giant Pumpkins will occur on Saturday, 10/11/03.The pumpkin sculpting is expected to take 16 hours, and will occur on Sunday, 10/12/03, and Monday 10/13. The Totem Pole will be complete by 4:00pm Monday 10/13/03, and will remain on display at the garden center. For more information contact either of the following parties
