PARADISE DATACOM SELECTS LYNUXWORKS BLUECAT LINUX FOR NEXT-GENERATION SATELLITE DATA MODEMS

BlueCat Linux Provides Telecommunications Leader Simple Path to Real-time Performance and Comprehensive Set of Development Tools For Increased Flexibility and Lower Design Overhead

SAN JOSE, CA (PRWEB) October 8, 2003 -- LynuxWorks Inc. today announced that Paradise Datacom has chosen BlueCat® Linux® to power its next-generation satellite data modems. As a leading commercial satellite equipment provider, Paradise Datacom required a stable, commercial-grade embedded operating system (OS) to support the advanced IP connectivity of its satellite modems, which are used worldwide for point-to-point and point-to-multipoint satellite IP connectivity to avoid terrestrial network congestion and supply guaranteed bandwidth for critical applications. BlueCat Linux met this requirement and also provided Paradise Datacom with the flexibility of open-source software, leveraging the Linux model that is used in a wide range of development applications. BlueCat Linux enables Paradise Datacom to improve design productivity and protect and extend its Linux development investment by providing a simple path to migrate to real-time, deterministic performance.

The availability of a comprehensive set of embedded tools to decrease time-to-market was a major criterion in Paradise Datacoms selection of BlueCat Linux. Among the advanced tools BlueCat Linux provides are VisualLynux and Spyker. VisualLynux is an extension of Microsoft® Visual Studio IDE that enables developers to build BlueCat Linux applications in a Windows host environment to accelerate development and improve product performance and quality. LynuxWorks Spyker is the first dynamic instrumented system trace analyzer that allows developers to accurately perform event tracing to not only gather, display and interact with data concerning their applications, but also accelerate development and debugging with easy, anytime visibility into their product design process. With these comprehensive tools Paradise can enhance product quality and reliability and rapidly deploy its next generation of data satellite modems to market.

BlueCat Linux also provides Paradise a risk-free path to real-time performance through its Linux ABI (application binary interface) compatibility with LynuxWorks LynxOS® hard real-time operating system (RTOS). This will enable Paradise to run its Linux application code unmodified on LynxOS with no costly or lengthy porting process should real-time capabilities become a requirement in future development. This approach enables customers to protect their investment and avoid the high cost-barriers and time-to-market penalties that changing embedded operating systems normally incurs.

By leveraging the Linux model, BlueCat Linux provides us the ability to easily integrate third party software into the design of our satellite data modems, helping us to reduce the length and cost of our design processes," said Robert MacKinlay manager of research and development for Paradise Datacom. Furthermore, BlueCat Linux provides us a common solution across our entire product line that allows us to protect our investment by enabling us to migrate to real-time capabilities in the future."

LynuxWorks offers the most complete range of Linux ABI compatible products to address customers design challenges," said Gerry Winkler, managing director of LynuxWorks EMEA. BlueCat Linux has proven to be a stable, robust architecture for the telecommunications industry with its inherent TCP/IP support and networking capabilities which proved to be invaluable to Paradise Datacoms product design. Furthermore, our world-class VisualLynux and Spyker development tools provide enhanced performance and productivity capabilities that will be critical in getting Paradise Datacoms products to market more rapidly and cost effectively than their competition."
