Black and Tan Improv (Ana Elizondo and Shaun Landry, both members of Oui Be Negroes www.ouibenegroes.com) started with The San Francisco Improv Co-Operative( www.sfimprovcooperative.com) Since it's inception earlier this year, Black and Tan Improv has been performing to rave reviews in The Bay Area and has gotten recognition as "The slickest, Hippest and smartest improv ensemble in San Francisco"
Black and Tan's goal is to create stories and long form improvisation that hits social and political topics, highlights African American Women in Improvisation, and to have a really good time.
Shaun Landry, the other half of Black and Tan Improv, feels that there is still, after years of highlighting African American Women, that there is a drastic lack of Black Females performing improvisation:
"First it was 'Where are all the black people in improv?'" Landry 38 says "Then we started Negroes, and things started to pick up and I start getting a tons of African American men. Now after ten years...I'm now at 'Where are all the Black Women?'"
Ana Elizondo (an Oakland Native, and one of the few black women doing improvisation in San Francisco) joined Oui Be Negroes and brought her own style of energetic characters and storytelling to the ensemble. Landry and Elizondo hit it off on and offstage immediately.
"It is a personally a joy to create improv with her. And to get more African American Women interested in doing this format, and do it well, is always a highlight for me. It is also a complete joy to work with someone as talented as Ana" laughs Landry. "I think the best part of Ana is we are so easy with each other offstage, our only concern is 'who is going to wear black and who is going to wear brown onstage'"
