Keith Matthews and Mike Chandler started 2Xtreme Media, a Simi Valley web development and hosting firm, after having a streak of bad luck working for other larger firms in the industry. Today, their own business is thriving and much of that is due to what they learned from the failed dot-coms that used to employ them.

"Keith and I watched with frustration as our employers failed time and time again in this business, only to eventually lay everyone off and cut their client base," says Mike Chandler. "We thought, 'They just don't connect with their clients. It doesn't seem that hard. We should be doing this ourselves.'"

Chandler credits 2Xtreme Media's success with its level of interaction with people. He continues, "Not all people are comfortable with technology and most people are nervous about web technology. You need to establish a trust relationship with clients. You need to get to know them. Only then can you best identify their needs and only then will they trust that you're delivering a solution that fills those needs."

In addition to nurturing client relationships, Chandler and Matthews have been active in the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce. "The Chamber has really been great," says Keith Matthews. "I'm not a public speaker and shy away from business networking, but the Chamber welcomes our company with open arms. I'm known for not talking much -- but I'm known!"

"The Chamber has definitely been a good thing for our business," says Chandler. "Taking an interest in the local business community is very helpful and has been a great help for our young business."

After having been in business for one year, 2Xtreme Media has exceeded its own goals for growing its web design client base. The company's hosting network has expanded from a small, out of state reseller network to an elaborate network of six web servers at a Los Angeles collocation facility. The 2Xtreme Media staff has grown from just the two principal owners to a total of four people consisting of designers, developers and network engineers.

Keith Matthews is determined to keep the company growing. "If we can double our efforts this year," he says, "I'll be satisfied."
