Durbar Square Creations Creates a Trust for Unemployed in Nepal
October 7, 2003. The artisans of Durbar Square, Katmandu, Nepal formed a trust organization to fund educational and employment training from their profits. Among the products they produce are handmade papers, hand painted greeting cards, and beaded jewelry.
Durbar Square Creations is located in the ancient city of Katmandu, the capital of Nepal. Nestled in the fertile valley, under the majestic Himalayas, Katmandu is part of the ancient trade and pilgrimage route from India to Tibet and China. Katmandu is rich in culture inspired by both Eastern and British cultures. To cross a street in Katmandu is to travel across centuries. Durbar Square is located in the hub of Katmandu and has been famous for the many artisans, both local and those who migrated there over they years. During the age of the hippies in the 1960, many poems and songs were written about Durbar Square as an escape from the worlds pressures.
The unfortunate reality of Nepal, however, is the more then 8 years of civil disorder they continue experience due to the Maoist Guerrilla based insurgency that is fighting to take control the current government. This situation created many hardships for the natives of Nepal; among them are the educational needs of the young and huge unemployment. But the people of Nepal are more then willing to work to attain these goals.
I met Prakash Sunuwar more then 2 years ago when I sent him an email admiring the greeting cards he posted on a website I visited. At the time, Prakash was working toward attaining his Masters Degree in Management and earning a small income working with an organization to help disabled people. He created the greeting cards in his spare" time and joined forces with a friend to establish a small artisan community as a means of earning a small income to support his needs, while also providing employment opportunities for others. Together, we established Durbar Square Creations to offer these crafts in the United States and Canada on a wholesale basis. Recently, Prakash formed a trust organization in which he donates a portion the income earned by Durbar Square Creations to help fund the educational and employment training needs in his country.
