From Cuba to the Regattabar…La Timba Loca
Boston, MA- Fresh from the electrifying performances of their Cuba Tour 2003 tour at the Beni Moré International Festival, La Timba Loca (LTL) brings their aggressive salsa a la timba style back home to burn up the Regattabar stage on November 4, 2003. The Regattabar, described as "the hub of jazz in Boston," by the The Boston Globe and "best jazz bar" by Rolling Stone, will host the salsa sensation in a welcome home concert after their resounding success in the island where the bands musical style was born. The cities of Cienfuegos and Sta. Isabel de Las Lajas on Cubas southern coast were the stage for LTLs Cuban debut. A debut that took place in front of crowds of more than 5,000 who danced on the streets until 5 in the morning to the infectious beat of the Boston group.
The ensembles founder, Gonzalo Grau, graduated from Berklee College of Music and put together the first "timba" band outside of Cuba composed entirely of international musicians from the Boston and New York Latin music scenes that he met during his years at the institution. "Timba" is the latest step in the salsa movement coming from Cuba, characterized by influences of funk and jazz as well as heavy audience interaction.
"Because of his Venezuelan ancestry, Grau carries in his veins the good taste of Son and the evident influence of Guaco," says Cuban salsa star and Beni Moré Festival President, Isaac Delgado. "His musical arrangements give me a tour going from Joaquin Betancourts Opus 13, Chuchos Irakere and Naranjos Trabuco Venezolano to Calzados Charanga and Cortes Banda NG; but in essence it is him; with a new way of ‘timbear," he adds.
For the last 4 years, La Timba Loca has brought its Afro-Caribbean "timba" sound to venues such as the Hatch Memorial Shell, Ryles Jazz Club, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. SOBs and Nells have presented the band in New York City and the Sydney Opera House in Australia hosted the ensemble for New Years Eve 2002. After their sold out Scullers Jazz Club show in Boston earlier this year, Bob Young of the Boston Herald described the band as "high-octane salsa with flash, urgency and lots of unexpected contours."
La Timba Loca released its debut CD "Mas Allá de la Habana" ("Beyond Havana") in the summer of 2002 to critical acclaim. It earned a slot in the top 20 of Latin jazz charts in cities such as New York, LA and San Francisco according to Latin music authority, Latin Beat Magazine.
Tickets for La Timba Locas Regattabar debut on November 4, 2003 are $ 12 and the show begins at 8:30pm. The Regattabar is located inside the Charles Hotel in Harvard Sq. Cambridge, Massachusetts. For tickets and information call 617-876-7777 or visit www.regattabar.com.
