Song Promo Sparks Controversy
Radio station refuses to air promo for Woody Woodham's song, Doing Business with a Gun.
(San Diego, California) A major San Diego, California radio station has refused to air an ad for the promo of Woody Woodhams song, Doing Business with a Gun.
The song is about the violence that plagues America. Says Woodham, I feel an obligation to get the message out there. Im sick of hearing about people killing each other every time I turn on the news. My hope is that publicizing the issue will inspire the pursuit of a less violent society."
A refrain from the song goes: A man went into work one day/ and in a panic/ He blew his comrades all away/with a semi-automatic/...Doing business with a gun/ to brighten up the day/ You know its how the West was won/the good ol American way."
The ad guy from the radio station e-mailed me saying the program director would not approve the ad because it promotes a song that is not on their playlist. I thought that was a poor excuse because I heard some beer commercial on their station pushing some band I had never heard of," says Woodham.
FM 94/9 program director, Garret Michaels, did admit he put a kibosh" on the ad because he said the arrangement sounded a little like payola." He also said he nixed it because Woodham asked for a specific DJ to read the copy.
How is payola involved when Im not making a profit on it," responded Woodham. The MP3 of the song is available for free at my site (http://woodywoodham.com)"... Besides," says Woodham, with payola you get the whole 4 minutes. I just wanted 20 seconds. Concerning having a particular DJ read the copy, they never told me
this was a factor. I would have had no problem if someone else read it."
Woodham turned to one of the competing FM stations and purchased seven spots.
Well get it on the air. Were very open to advertisers," said Scott Meyers, ad rep for premium radio 92/1.
