Barracuda Networks announced today the Barracuda Spam Firewall, a scalable anti-spam and anti-virus product line. The Barracuda Spam Firewall provides businesses with an enterprise-class spam and virus protection solution which is easy to use and affordable. A single box can block from 1 to 10 million spam messages, as well as viruses, every day. The Barracuda Spam Firewall is automatically updated hourly to block new forms of spam and viruses. At a starting price is $1,199, the Barracuda Spam Firewall can be installed in front of the email server in typically less than five minutes. Today, in a separate announcement, Barracuda Networks also announced its reseller program.

“Spam is growing at an alarming rate, forcing companies of all sizes to find effective ways to control this massive productivity disruption,” said Dean Drako, President and CEO of Barracuda Networks. “With the Barracuda Spam Firewall we have created a powerful solution that is easy to use and automatically maintained.”

The Barracuda Spam Firewall supports from 1,000 to 10,000 active users with no per user licensing fees. Its architecture leverages open source virus and spam solutions in conjunction with eight defense layers: denial of service and security protection, IP block list, rate control, virus check with archive decompression, proprietary virus check, user specified rules, spam fingerprint check, and a spam rule-based scoring system with Bayesian analysis. The architecture minimizes the processing of each email, which yields the performance required to process millions of messages per day. Unlike software solutions, the Barracuda Spam Firewall reduces the load placed on the email server by off-loading both spam and virus filtering. Barracuda Networks also offers the Energize Update subscription service to automatically update the Barracuda Spam Firewall with the latest spam rules and virus definitions.

NMCGroup, an industrial plastics manufacturer has approximately 800 employees of which 300 use email extensively. "My employees were spending so much of their time weeding through spam emails, often times deleting important emails in the process, that we couldn't get our work done," said Robert Stephen, General Manager of NMCGroup. "The Barracuda Spam Firewall has turned email into a productive business tool again. We are very pleased."
