Magician Andrew Makar (Magic Fun Man) promotes National Magic Week by teaching Nataki Talibah elementary students the Art of Magic in an 8-week course. The Kapoof! Its Magic for Kids course is being offered at Nataki Talibah throughout the month of October and November. Elementary students experience Magic firsthand and are taught Magic's basic principles and inside secrets. The students build self-confidence and improve their public speaking skills by practicing and performing the Magic taught in the class for their teachers and fellow students.

Mrs. Debra Norfleet contacted Andrew Makar several weeks ago to provide an after school program for the elementary students. The after school program is funded in part by a 21st century community learning center grant from the U.S. Department of Education and is in its 3rd year of existence. Each class is an hour long and all the students receive instructions, professional props, and local resources to inspire them to be Magic's future stars. Students can be found performing various type of Magic ranging from floating wands, disappearing balls, or reading minds. A class favorite is the Cups and Balls, a classic of magic, which is one of Magic's oldest feats of prestidigitation. The trick is so old that drawings of the Cups and Balls can be found on the pyramids in Egypt!

Despite all the fun, don't ask the students how the trick works. They've all learned the number one rule in magic -- Never share the secret (unless with other magicians).

National Magic Week occurs during the last week of October where magicians throughout the United States promote the Art of Magic. The history of National Magic Week spans over 65 years following the death of the famous magician and escape artist, Harry Houdini. Each year various magic societies like the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Society of American Magicians encourage their members to promote National Magic Week and raise awareness around the art form. During the October 27th session, Mr. Makar will review the history of National Magic Week and present the Great Jacket Escape, an effect older than Harry Houdini!

The Kapoof! Its Magic for Kids class at Nataki Talibah is a big hit with the students. Each week the students look forward to the MagicFun Man and his Big Bag of Tricks. Other Nataki Talibah students can visit us on October 27th, learn about National Magic Week, and witness the Great Jacket Escape.
