The American Civil Liberties Union (PRWEB) October 16, 2003
K-12 Students Rights Forum
Guest Speakers include:
Hedy Weinberg, Executive Director, ACLU of TN, along with Susan Kay, Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs at Vanderbilt University Law School, and Vice-President of the ACLU-TN.
The purpose of this forum, according to the Director of the Urban Resource Center, Mr. Terry McMoore, is to provide information to students, parents, teachers and other school staff members on the Constitutional rights that students in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) have under the Constitution of the United States. Often times our society waits until a student has reached the age of 18 years of age to inform them of even the basic rights to which they are entitled to while attending the Elementary and Secondary Education School Systems.
After sending some students from the Clarksville - Montgomery County School System to the ACLU Students Rights Conference in Nashville, TN last spring, the Urban Resource Center thought this would be an excellent event to host in Clarksville. So, the Urban Resource Center invited the ACLU to come to our community. The Urban Resource Center is hoping to make this Students Rights Forum an annual event.
ACLU Executive Director, Hedy Weinberg and Associates will cover such topics as: Dress Codes, Searches, Due Process, Religious Beliefs, Discrimination, Freedom of Speech, Rights of the Disabled and More!
We invite you, the Media, along with the Public, to come out and cover this first ever event to take place here, in Clarksville, TN. The forum will take place on: Thursday, October 23, 2003, 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Burt-Cobb Community Center, 1011 Franklin St., Clarksville, TN 37040. This event is FREE and OPEN to the PUBLIC and Students and Parents are encouraged to attend.
Sincerely,
Terry McMoore
