Native Texan Brings Award-Winning Film to Out Takes Dallas
(Dallas, TX) The award-winning feature film A Normal Life, written and directed by Dewey Moss, will be featured at the 2003 Out Takes Dallas Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, November 14-23, 2003. This screening follows the highly successful premiere at the Q-Cinema Festival of Forth Worth, where the film was awarded Best Feature Premiere" by both the audience and screening panel.
It was easily one of my most rewarding moments as a film festival programmer," recounted Todd Camp, director of the Q-Cinema Festival, having Saginaw native Moss in attendance at this years event was a treat in and of itself but watching how the audience reacted to his moving, gay-parenting picture A Normal Life and participating in the enthusiastic and emotional question and answer period that followed the film reminded me of why I and the festival staff put Q Cinema on every year."
Since the Fort Worth premiere, the popularity of A Normal Life continues to skyrocket. Encore screenings of the movie were added at the 2003 Memphis Outflix Gay and Lesbian Film Festival to accommodate word-of-mouth demand. Internationally, the movie is scheduled to premiere in the Philippines, New Zealand and Australia, with numerous U.S. city premieres scheduled for early 2004.
Filmed on a shoe-string budget and in only three weeks, A Normal Life unfolds a subtle drama that breaks away from broad Hollywood gay stereotypes by providing a realistic portrayal of a family dealing with gay parenting issues. Josh, played by Kelly AuCoin, must choose between raising his son as a gay parent, or bowing to the wishes of his family and give up the child. The movie grapples with Joshs emotionally charged internalized homophobia, the strong family influences that dictate many peoples lives, and the conflicts between what is considered normal by both the gay and straight communities. In addition to AuCoin, the film receives stellar performances from Barney Fitzpatrick, Zachary Savage, Gwendolyn Saska-Brown, Eric Christie, Colette Duvall and the director Dewey Moss himself.
I wasnt sure if gay audiences were ready for a quiet, slice of life film in a world of gay cinema that tends to be about what most perceive to be the 'in gay lifestyle -- my style of filmmaking is just about as opposite as you can get," says Moss of his creation, but I feel there is a segment of people out there who may not always identify with pop culture, and this is about and for them -- to show how hard it often still is to accept and love ourselves, and that ultimately we all struggle with the same human issues. I wanted a simple, honest story with honest acting, and at each new screening the audiences have truly surprised and overwhelmed me with their enthusiasm. Every time someone comes up to me and says theyve never seen someone so much like themselves onscreen, or a straight person tells me its the first time theyve really identified with gay people, then I know Ive accomplished my goal. "
Dewey Moss is a native of the Dallas-Fort Worth area and attended Texas Wesleyan University where he majored in theatre. After living and acting in Dallas for several years he relocated to New York City. Since then his numerous acting credits include shows both on and off-Broadway, guest-starring roles in TV shows and films, and currently writing and directing this debut feature film. Mr. Moss has a gay television pilot in development, while also working on a one-man stage show entitled Standing Naked at the Cross," about growing up as a gay Southern Baptist.
