Adinkra Symbology

Adinkra is a collection of symbols that represent social codes by the Akan people of Ghana and the Ivory Coast-along the west coast of Africa. It is a set of ideals that provide guidelines to successful human conduct -- this value system transcends time and culture. Adinkra has withstood the test of time by combining beautiful designs with knowledge and wisdom. The Adinkra realm covers important aspects of life like family values, social responsibility, civic involvement and harmony with nature.

The symbols are simply elegant and beautiful in design, they appear familiar and intriguing in code. Adinkra is not a religious practice though its essence is of spirituality and humanism: A belief in the Supremacy of God, life on earth and man's power to affect the universe positively or negatively as well as his responsibility to protect the environment in order to maintain continuity of its past, present and future inhabitants. Adinkra is about personal enlightenment.

Adinkra is also a dynamic blend of arts and philosophy. Although symbols date back to the early 19th century, new images continue to enter the Adinkra realm. The symbols have been applied as arts and crafts in areas of textiles, fashion accessories, architecture, furniture and interior design as well as publishing.

The Adinkra Symbology packs a great deal of knowledge that can be inspiring, healing, empowering as well as grounding and should be used to a spiritual advantage.
