In North Korea--An American Travels through an Imprisoned Nation by Nanchu and Xing Hang

3.5 million Norht Korenas out of an entire population of 23 million have starved to death since the famine began in 1991. The motality rate of the on-going North Korean famine, at 15 percent is higher than that of the Soviet and China famines, which were at 5 and 6 percent, respectively. And the death rate is still growing. What can the world do to help? Bomb the country? Starve the regime to death? Rise in arms? The authors see the first light.

IN¡NNORTH KOREA

In North Korea is Athens writer Nanchu's new book. She is the author of Red Sorrow, a memoir about China's Cultural Revolution and Red Guards.

This is an account of her recent travels through North Korea. Throughout her journey, she witnessed desperately rundown villages, starving hollow-eyed children, haggard women crawling in the fields for single grains of rice, and civilians unloading food at the point of bayonets.

The author predicts that North Korea's economic reform, which has just started will progress slowly, but that the country will one day be open to the outside world. It may, however, take another twenty years for this reform to be complete. Small, reluctant changes have already happened, and this book expresses optimism that one day the North Korean people will end their isolation and join the world's mainstream.

Her co-author is Xing Hang, an Eastern Studies Scholar at the University of Georgia.
