Battle of the Artist Curators is the inaugural show of Haze Gallery in Portland, OR. This show presents the work of artists who themselves are also responsible for making decisions about the inclusion or exclusion of art in other venues. Running through November and December 2003, this show will completely change at the one-month mark with all of the artists altering or swapping out their pieces for new ones. Showcasing a wide spectrum of artists, from the young gallery owner to the seasoned professional, Battle of the Artist Curators will be an exciting and different take not only on a traditional gallery show but also on its participants.
(PRWEB) October 21, 2003 --Battle of the Artist Curators is the inaugural show of Haze Gallery in Portland, OR. This show presents the work of artists who themselves are also responsible for making decisions about the inclusion or exclusion of art in other venues. Running through November and December 2003, this show will completely change at the one-month mark with all of the artists altering or swapping out their pieces for new ones. Showcasing a wide spectrum of artists, from the young gallery owner to the seasoned professional, Battle of the Artist Curators will be an exciting and different take not only on a traditional gallery show but also on its participants.
Muriel Bartol has curated shows in both Portland, OR and in Los Angeles, CA, where she currently lives. She was Los Angeles Liaison for The Best Coast (2003) show in Portland, OR, curator of the Fluorescence show at Field Gallery, Portland and was gallery director at Nil Contemporary Art in Portland. Among other venues, she has shown locally at Field Gallery, Nil Contemporary Art and Soudvision. She has also shown in Seattle and New York. Bartol will be exhibiting a new fluorescent site-specific wall installation.
Jacqueline Ehlis has curated many shows including "Subscribe", a show of 5 Portland area women at Pacific University, "Nature Morte" a student sculpture show at UNLV and "Disjointed", a student painter show at Pacific University. In Portland, Ehlis has shown her work at The Art Gym, Savage Gallery, Field Gallery and the Littman Gallery, among others. Her work has also been shown in Georgia, Nevada and Washington. Ehlis will be exhibiting a new piece, "Postmodernism is Over: Choose Your Weapon", which makes a visual manifesto declaring the death of postmodernism.
Johnne Eschlemen is a Portland based artist who produces site-specific works that incorporate aspects of film, music, installation and performance. He has recently toured the United States with his roaming performance piece, The Traveling Cinema. Eschlemen will be exhibiting a new multi-media installation.
Jeff Jahn is as an active independent curator on the West Coast. He is a critic for Modern Painters (London), New York Arts Magazine and arts editor for nwdrizzle.com. Jahn will be exhibiting a piece that activates atavistic primal urges and recognitions, food, threat, posture as well as defining the flux of intentionally and surprise in the artistic act.
Todd Johnson ran the Floyd Watkins Gallery in Portland Oregon. His work has most recently been exhibited in the shows The Best Coast, Play and Symbiont/Synthetic. Johnson will be exhibiting a new installation exploring the constructed identity of Floyd Watkins.
Eva Lake is founder and director of Lovelake in Portland, OR and curator for Trimet's Interstate Max line. Lake has been in dozens of shows both nationally and internationally throughout the past two decades. Since 2002 she has been host and producer of ARTSTAR on KPSU. Lake will be exhibiting a new painting.
Marci Macfarlane is the Basil Hallward Gallery Co-Curator at Powells Bookstore. Macfarlane has participated in several shows in the Portland area, including ones at the Basil Hallward Gallery and at La Luna and Café Oasis. Macfarlane will be exhibiting cement sculptures of Easter Island heads.
TJ Norris has curated shows nationwide since 1988, most recently at Soundvision in Portland, OR. He has written extensively about art and music for many publications and his art is in dozens of private and public collections. He has shown most recently at Soundvision, the Modern Zoo and at the Best Coast Show. Norris will be exhibiting a concept sculpture based on the cloning of urban culture.
Michael Oman-Reagan is director of Field Gallery in Portland, OR. He has shown locally at PDX Gallery, Field Gallery, Orlo and Nil Contemporary Art. Oman-Reagan will be exhibiting a new site-specific installation that is part of his main body of work, The Communication Project, where he communicates directly and intuitively with the placement of objects and the construction of ideas and experiences
Justin Oswald is director and curator of Gallery 500 in Portland, OR. He has shown at the Eric and Ronna Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art at Lewis and Clark College and at Madame Butterfly. Oswald will be exhibiting new shaped, sculptural paintings.
Bryan Suereth is owner of Disjecta and Creative Director of the Portland Center for the Advancement of Culture. He has shown at the Hall Gallery, the Modern Zoo and most recently in the Symbiont/Synthetic show for Core Sample. Suereth will be exhibiting the next installment of his pseudo-bio-genetics series.
Vicki Lynn Wilson is Member/Artist/Co-owner of Blackfish Co-op Gallery in Portland. Next year she will be curating a show for Blackfish focusing on performance, video, music and installation artists. She has had several shows at Blackfish and has also shown at Disjecta, the Portland Building Installation Space and the Phillip Feldman Gallery at PNCA. Wilson will be exhibiting a diorama sculpture.
