Frustrated Young Author Self-Publishes Book "Frustrated Young Men"; Patiently Awaits Fame, Fortune

"Frustrated Young Men", a new collection of short stories by John O'Brien, is available online at PulpLit.com. The world, as of this date, is unfazed.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Berkeley, Calif. - Part of a growing trend of deluded writers so desperate to get published they pour all their money into crazy self-publishing schemes, John OBrien, self-made author and entrepreneur, has self-published his collection of short fiction, Frustrated Young Men . The publishing world so far has taken little notice.

"I expect to move a thousand units in the first week," said the young author. "That may be a little optimistic, but I figure its best to aim high." When asked whether he could ever really hope to break even on the project, the young author seemed nonplussed. "Were entering a new age of direct interaction between artists and their audiences. As the cost of producing media, newspapers, books, and CDs gets cheaper, were going to see more artists cut out the middleman. I think of it as a shift from a client-server relationship for the transmission of art to a peer-to-peer model."

Whatever the analogy, evidence seems to indicate that self-publishing is not a profitable endeavor. To date, PulpLit.com, the site through which OBrien sells his book, has sold less then 25 copies. And most of those sales were to friends and family, hardly a resounding endorsement of OBriens business model.

"He hasnt got a chance in hell," said Jason Clarke, formerly of MPG Newspapers. "My great-grandmother could write a better book than him. You couldnt pay any book store to carry his book, even on consignment."

Unemployed, OBrien first started the publishing project as something to do while he looked for work. Eventually, it became an obsession, with OBrien working late into the night, often referring to himself in the third person. "When John OBrien is rich and famous," said OBrien, "these first run copies of his debut book will be worth millions. Youll see. There are six billion people on the planet earth. I want them each to have three copies of my book." Time will tell whether OBrien is correct or very deluded.
