Los Angeles Screenwriter Gives Writing Contest the One-Two-Three Punch!
Writing contest gives birth to aspiring African American writer's dreams, as he looks to develop one, two or three of his dramatic TV series for network television.
October 23, 2003 -- Aspiring African American writer, Angelo J. Bell, is in a great position to win the WriteSafe.com Present-a-thon writing competition and see one of his TV series ideas hit the air. Of the thirty-four semi-finalists, Angelo is the only writer with THREE scripts in the running.
"I realize that Hollywood screenwriting contests are terribly subjective, and as a professional writer I can't put too much emphasis on winning," said Angelo. "However, the attention often does open doors." Breaking down the doors of Hollywood is never easy; just ask the thousands of aspiring writers with heaps of rejected scripts on their desks. However, successive small battles often lead to the winning of the war, and as Angelo puts it, "Just being a semi-finalist, I feel as though I've already won a major battle."
Angelo is very excited about being so close to fulfilling his dream of screenwriting in Hollywood. This recent achievement comes on the heels of several close calls. In the last six months he has been a semi-finalist, finalist or both in three Los Angeles based screenwriting contests. In addition to having great odds at winning the Present-a-thon Contest, Angelo is even more excited about the far-reaching affects of becoming writer/producer for a primetime television series.
"I've always heard that in order to get more people of color in front of the cameras you have to get more people of color behind the camera," said Angelo. "A win in the Present-a-thon Contest may facilitate the process. The characters in my scripts are as diverse and 'colorful' as the world we live in."
Indeed! Angelo's TV series scripts consist of the youthful, Y-SQUAD, a short script titled SEX, SHOES & UNICORNS and THE MANY REINCARNATIONS OF HARRY WINSTON, a funny TV series for 'tweens'.
Let the bidding war begin! Angelo has already received numerous requests for his Y-SQUAD script has been asked by development execs to make himself available for rewrites of existing scripts.
