International Justice Navanethem Pillay and Dr. Alex Boraine Lead Panel Discussion on International Justice in a post 9/11 world
at NYU, November 5th
New York Universitys Lillian Vernon Center for International Affairs and the International Center for Transitional Justice will co-host Trials and Tribunals: New Paths to International Justice," a panel discussion exploring how to address gross violations of human rights in post conflict situations.
Among the topics to be covered: What steps do countries in transition need to take to promote justice? What outcome can we predict for countries that fail to establish the rule of law, respect for human rights, and equal opportunities for all? What is the emerging and related role of the International Criminal Court?
This event is free and open to the public.
WHO: Justice Navanethem Pillay, recently appointed as one of 18 judges to the International Criminal Court based at The Hague. A native of South Africa, where she practiced law and was a human rights advocate, Justice Pillay was formerly the president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
Dr. Alex Boraine, founding president of the International Center for Transitional Justice and former deputy chairperson of the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission. From 1998 through early 2001, he served as professor of law at New York University and as director of NYU Law School's Justice in Transition program.
