Photographer mistaken as terrorist gets first show in NYC

When photographer and historian Nick Barberio was taken off a NJ Transit train by police for taking pictures last March, he had no idea how his life would change. Now, he is turning that experience into art. "It was eye opening to see how our civil liberties have eroded."

Estrangement on a Train

New York, NY, 10/31/03 - When photographer Nick Barberio, who has a knack for turning the ugly, the everyday, and the invisible into hauntingly poetic images, was doing his usual picture-taking from the windows of New Jersey Transit last March, the long arm of Homeland Security fingered him. Hauled off at Newark, he was interrogated about his perverse visual interest in factories, waste dumps, and construction sites.

Fortunately, it was determined that he was no threat to America. Fortunately, too, he will be showing his images, shot in places from Rome to the Rockies, from Alsace to the Bronx, of landscapes overlooked and persons captured unawares—what he calls my own personal spying on the world" –in a show entitled Reconnaissance at Steven Harris Architects. The gallery is located at 120 Chambers Street in New York City and the exhibit runs from November 4 through November 28, 2003.

ABOUT Nick Barberio:
Nick Barberio is a resident of Princeton, NJ and New York City. He works as both a clothing historian and photographer. Nick Barberio has a Masters in Visual Culture from New York University and has worked on projects for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History. In Princeton, Nick has worked with The Princeton Art Museum, McCarter Theater and taught at Princeton Adult School.
