The Worlds Largest Cargo Airplane is Coming to Salt Lake City!
On November 5, 2003, a Russian Antonov AN-124-100 aircraft, the largest regularly operated cargo plane in the world, will land at Salt Lake City International Airport. Dynatec Corporation is bringing the Antonov to the City for the purpose of transporting approximately 106,000 kg (roughly 230,000 lbs.) of drill rigs, bulldozers, compressors and other equipment to the Companys Ambatovy nickel project in Madagascar, where a bankable feasibility study is currently underway. Dynatec is an international mining, drilling and metallurgical technologies company, with U.S. mining and drilling operations headquartered in Salt Lake City and 220 employees across the United States.
This charter was arranged using the Salt Lake City office of Expeditors International, a global logistics management company.
How big is the Antonov AN-124-100? The aircraft is approximately 230 feet long with a wing-span of 240 feet. It weighs 175,000 kg (385,800 lbs.) empty, can carry a total payload of 120,000 kg (265,000 lbs.) and has a maximum takeoff weight of 392,000 kg (862,000 lbs). The aircrafts 24-wheel landing gear allows it to kneel down" which significantly reduces the loading/unloading times. The nose of the aircraft is a large cargo door that swings upward, with an additional cargo door located near the back of the aircraft. Both doors are equipped with unfolding cargo ramps. More information about the Antonov AN-124-100 aircraft is available at www.vda.com.ru (click on Fleet).
Media are invited to cover the arrival of this extraordinary aircraft, which is scheduled to land at approximately 1:00 pm MST on November 5th and which will depart Salt Lake City at about 7:00 am MST on November 6th. Journalists wishing to attend should travel to Salt Lake Jet Center, 470 North 2400 West, Salt Lake City, UT (Use General Aviation Access #2) approximately 15 minutes before the scheduled landing time and follow the Dynatec signs to meeting room. Those attending will be allowed to film from the ramp at this location, which will be very close to the plane. There will be a meeting room available for interviews.
