LOS ANGELES - Carlos Guitarlos, once a member of the hard-living and influential '80s LA club band Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs, and until more recently known for playing on the streets of San Francisco, has inked a deal to ensure his life story will be told on film. Hollywood based production company About Entertainment has optioned the musicians turbulent life story.
Guitarlos, who was recently celebrated by the City Council as one of Los Angeles' homegrown treasures, began his tumultuous career as a revered guitarist in the citys burgeoning roots-punk scene of the 80s. While peers such as Los Lobos, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and X went on to greater successes, Guitarlos embodied the storied excesses that marked the era. Drugs, booze, and infighting caused his band to implode and sent Carlos reeling, which ultimately left him playing and living the streets of San Francisco, where he followed his estranged wife and daughter.
Guitarlos life as a street musician during the ensuing decade kept him out of the public eye and written off as a musical force, until a near-death experience and the alcohol-related passing of friend and former band-mate Top Jimmy jarred him into sobriety. With the help of some old friends, Mike Watt, John Doe of X and Grammy Winner Dave Alvin, he has since released a solo CD, Straight from the Heart", that has received wide critical acclaim and has been played on hundreds of stations across the country.
About Entertainment, which has ten feature films to their credit, is headed by Michael Meltzer and Frank Gargani. Meltzer is also currently developing Tomorrows Child for Universal.
