Peace Day 2003 is being held between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. this Sat., November 8th at the 32nd Street / USC Vision and Performing Arts Magnet School in Los Angeles.

Peace Day 2003
WHAT:
Peace Day is an annual event for kids that was founded by a multi-cultural group concerned that todays children dont realize peace IS attainable, even in small doses. Now in its eighth year, Peace Day celebrates and protects the similarities we all have, and respects the differences in all of us as members of a global society," says organizer Deidre Smith. This exciting day will feature games, a celebrity basketball tournament, performances, and a celebrity panel discussion geared towards children. This incredible event is an annual project of Peace Quest, Inc., a nonprofit organization Smith helped start in 1995.
WHEN:
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2003, 10 AM -- 5 PM
Free Admission. This event is open to the community.
WHERE:
32nd Street / USC Vision and Performing Arts Magnet School, 822 West 32nd St. (between Adams & Hoover) Los Angeles, CA (across the street from the Shrine Auditorium)
WHO:
Scheduled appearances during the day include the Los Angeles Lakers Girls, the boy band NXL, actress Adilah Barnes from Lifetime Televisions For the People and the film Erin Brokovich, Erica OKeith from the Romeo Show, the cast of Girlfriends, American Dreams Keith Robinson, players from the MTV Nike Battleground documentary and many more. The special host for the day will be Tony Award winner, Poetri of Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam on Broadway.
This years sponsors and participants are: Albertsons; C.H.P.; Cheesecake Factory; Circuit City; Concerned Citizens for Children of L.A.; F.B.I; Hot 92.3 FM; Hyatt Regency; L.A. Kings; Martin Luther King Hospital; National American Rights; Power 106 FM; Ralphs; The Beat 100.3 FM; Unity Corps; and USC Kids Watch. Past participants of Peace Day have included: U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer; U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein; Los Angeles Major Richard Riordan; California Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg; and many other sponsors and vendors who have donated their time, talent, products, services and funding to make the Peace Day event a success for 8 years now.
OVERVIEW: The schedule of events for this year include:
| | - 10:00 AM - Opening Circle for Peace" led by an Ecumenical Group of Clergy
- 10:00 AM - Peace Day Idol Competition for children 8 and up
- 1:00 PM - A Celebrity Panel discussing current events and how it affects kids
- Noon - 5 PM - Performances for kids by todays Rising Stars and Local Talent
- All Day Poetry Slam Contest and an Art and Essay Competition in which kids from area schools describe What peace means to me."
- All Day Various Workshops for the Kids -- everything from how to cook for yourself, a rock-climbing wall, and lessons in hip-hop.
