Mexican American Political Association Press Statement

MAPA Protests Against Assemblymember Gloria Negrete McLeod Over SB 60 Stance

We are again protesting in front of the offices of Assemblymember Gloria Negrete-McLeod today-the second time this week-to raise awareness of her efforts to repeal the Drivers License bill (SB 60). All of us in the Latino and immigrant communities were surprised to learn of her actions last week because (1) she is a member of the Latino caucus, (2) she voted for SB 60 earlier this year, and (3) she didnt consult with the author of the bill, State Senator Gil Cedillo.

The Latino and immigrant community is demanding that the Assemblymember pull back her legislative proposal to nullify the Drivers License bill and join others in protecting the new law. She was elected to the legislature thanks to the generous vote from the Latino population-about 42% of the population in her district of Montclair, Chino, Ontario, and Pomona-but needs to know that there may be electoral consequences for her unilateral action."

Nativo Lopez, MAPA President and National Director for Hermandad Mexicana Latinoamericana

Nativo Lopez will be available to speak to the media immediately before and after the press conference. Reach him by cell phone at (714) 423-4800.
