Cape Town, South Africa- A Short Message System (SMS) to Television software has been launched in Cape Town, South Africa. The SMS2TV software allows television stations to develop an interactive relationship with their viewers by allowing them to sent messages from their cellular phone to be scrolled out on television. SMS are sent by viewers to air their views, make comments and to vote on certain subject matters or competitions. It can also be used during talk shows, game shows and sport programmes. Televison stations could also generate further income by allowing businesses to advertise via SMS. TV stations could also share in revenue with service providers since the SMS are sent through their networks.
The sms2TV Server enables GSM SMS messages to be received by a computer in the studio and scanned for suitability by an operator and then sent out to a television character generator. A fully user configurable list of 'Undesirable Words' is used to automatically scan and reject Dirty" messages. Duplicate messages are automatically removed and it can use different cell phone numbers to receive viewers' SMS. The software is currently successfully used across all three channels of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). A GSM Modem is required to receive Bulk SMS.
