Drastically reducing time bio-medical scientists spend on searching PubMed, an online database of over 12 million abstracts from more than 4,600 biomedical journals published worldwide, the new search service by Ariadne Genomics retrieves abstracts containing all aliases of their proteins of interest, at the same time skipping casual keyword matches. For example, standard PubMed search shows only 18 abstracts for beta1,4-galactosyltransferase, while the new Search by Protein Name by Ariadne Genomics retrieves 429 abstracts for the same protein.

The underlying technology for the new web service is MedScanTM by Ariadne Genomics, a text mining tool specifically targeted at automated retrieving protein-related information from scientific texts. All MEDLINE abstracts are indexed using Ariadne Genomics dictionaries of protein names and aliases. Using BitMagic open source technology to significantly accelerate search times and improve computer memory usage, Ariadne Genomics has developed an inexpensive indexing engine for efficient storage and querying of Protein - Abstract relations generated by MedScanTM from the entire MEDLINE database.
