Employees Relocating within the US shifts again - SF Bay Area begins to rebound, NY not ready yet.
This quarterly report details the activity of employees relocating within the US. The most three most popular states to move to each month are highlighted, as well as some local trends across the country.
Every quarter, we analyze our historical moves to determine which states were the most popular for relocating employees. A simplified version of those results is available below for the first 9 months of this year.
This data does not take into account the wide variety of flows in and out of particular large cities in Texas, California and Florida. Some areas like California's Silicon Valley (and San Francisco) have experienced a dramatic outflows to other states. These metropolitan areas were experiencing 3:1 outflows during the first part of the year. That is for every family moving to San Francisco and Silicon Valley, there are three families moving out. In the most recent quarter, this trend has begun to slow (the rate is now 3:2), but more families are still leaving the Bay Area than moving into it.
Several other states continued to see an outflow of moves. States like New Jersey and especially New York continued to see more people domestically moving out of those states than in. In this past quarter families have been moving out of New York at a 2:1 rate. That is, two families are leaving the state for every family moving in.
