Q.T. Pie Stirs up Fun and Fantasy for Kids
Author Stephanie Sanders and illustrator Galen T. Pauling release two new children's books based on there cartoon character Q. T. Pie
Detroit, MI -- If Harry Potter were smarter hed be friends with Q.T. Pie. He wouldnt have to mess with magic because Q.T. Pie could show him her own enchanting ways that causes every dream to come true.
I wanted my daughter to emulate characters that are cute, fun and have a lot of smarts. Children are so impressionable and I was not finding books on the shelves that speak to her," said Stephanie Sanders, author. She and her graphic artist husband, Galen Pauling, are the creators of Q.T. Pie. -- chapter books that target African American girls 3 to 11 years old.
The series debuted in 1999 with The Ingredients of a Q.T. Pie and now have four titles published: Q.T. Pie Catches the Rainbow, Q.T. Pies Rescue Adventure, and Q.T. Pie Meets Smart E. The books have been popular with its target market where Sanders does readings at local libraries and schools. The Detroit Free Press gave the book high marks as well as writing groups like American Christian Writers/Detroit chapter.
The books are distributed through Baker & Taylor, Levy Home Entertainment, Culture Plus Books and BWI (a library distributor). Selling thousands of books is just the start. We envision Q.T. Pie having her own line of toys and products and TV show," said Pauling. T-shirts and activity books available on the website at www.QTPieWorld.com. Beach towels were also available at Kmart stores nationwide. Its been catching on because Q.T. Pie is so cool and she just captures your heart," he said.
Author Sanders knows that a good story is what keeps a child excited about reading. Once I have them reading, I introduce vocabulary words," she said. At the back of the books are words from the story that are defined and phonetically spelled out so children can build their vocabulary and be better.
at spelling words. Its important to get them interested in challenging words early so they think its fun to run across words you dont know -- and look them up."
Storytellers in the African American community are also excited about Q.T. Pie. I really wish this had been around when I was a little girl," said Nkkenge Abi, storyteller and book store manager from Michigan. The book has positive messages for girls.
When we did our informal research, we found there was a market missing for urban kids who want to feel included and applauded too. Q.T. Pie is an example of a child-driven project instead of the other way around," said Pauling.
The new books, which debuted this month, have more character depth and more plot suspense. We wanted to add more character qualities kids can really relate to," said Sanders. Q.T. Pie Meets Smart E shows children how to relate to one another and Q.T. Pies Rescue Adventure highlights Q.T. Pies selfless attitude to help others and how responsibility is rewarded.
The books are available in bookstores and from the SanPaul Group, L.L.C., 17704 Wormer Street, Detroit, MI 48219. The retail cost of each book is $4.99. The books are also available on amazon.com and bn.com. For more information or to request a reading from the author, call (313) 533-7383.
