Cogent Releases Driver for SST 5136-DNP (DeviceNet) Cards
Cogent Real-Time Systems has released the Cogent Driver for SST 5136-DNP (DeviceNet) Cards. This driver is available for Linux, QNX 6, and QNX 4, and it works with ISA and PCI cards. It starts up from a configuration file, and provides interactive debugging over the network. The driver offers simultaneous support for both master (Group 2 client) and slave (Group 2 server) modes.

Cogent Releases Driver for SST 5136-DNP (DeviceNet) Cards
Georgetown, Ontario (November 13, 2003) Cogent Real-Time Systems announced the release of the Cogent Driver for SST 5136-DNP (DeviceNet) Cards. This driver is available for Linux, QNX 6, and QNX 4, and it works with ISA and PCI cards.
The SST 5136-DNP Cards are device interface cards that connect a PC to a network using the DeviceNet protocol, for real-time control in industrial applications. The Cogent Driver for these cards provides access to all the features of the cards, including simultaneous support for both master (Group 2 client) and slave (Group 2 server) modes. The driver starts up from a configuration file, and provides interactive debugging over the network.
"We had the engineer in mind when we built this driver," said Manuel Dias, project director. "Configuration commands that map data to named points can originate from a configuration file, the user's application, or both. The engineer can take advantage of this to get a DeviceNet-based control system up and running quickly by using the configuration file, without giving up the flexibility and control that can be provided by programmatic configuration from the user application."
The driver has a built-in ability to discover and report its own configuration. A user can query it for metadata on cards, data buffers, and point attibutes, as well as for its current configuration. This can be done either interactively or with a program, while the driver is running.
Also at run time, the driver can be used for interactive field debugging. "One of the challenges of debugging a real-time system is figuring out where the problem lies--in the machinery or in the software", said Mr. Dias. "With this driver there is no need to guess. Its interactive commands give a viewport into all the I/O. You can see exactly where the problems originate."
In addition to the interactive interface, the Cogent Driver for SST 5136-DNP (DeviceNet) Cards supports two programming interfaces: the Cogent API, and a direct, low-level interface. It is also compatible with other Cogent products, such as the Cascade DataHub.
Founded in 1995, Cogent Real-Time Systems provides data connectivity software for professionals with a need to share real-time data among applications and users. Cogent's customers include the Bank of Canada, Cadbury Chocolate and the European Space Agency. The company has an engineering background, with a history of developing real-time applications for the industrial process control market.
