The Thoroughbred Genetics Company, which is the only organisation in the world currently offering genetic services on a commercial basis to the bloodstock industry, has launched two new, far-reaching genetic tests. GhP Score and MD Match will help breeders 'fine tune their mating decisions in the 2004 breeding season by providing vital genetic input on progeny stamping, levels of in-breeding and stamina potential. Results of both tests are derived from blood samples sent to the company for analysis.

GhP Score
The GhP score examines the stamping of progeny by the sire or dam. Measurement of GhP score gives a precise indication of how strongly a mare or stallion is likely to influence the genetic make-up of a foal, and in which way. This allows accurate prediction/management of the mating outcome.

Dr Stephen Harrison, director of The Thoroughbred Genetics Company says, GhP score completely rewrites traditional selection theories and pinpoints levels of inbreeding through scientific means. There is an optimal GhP score that is desirable in a horse. Below this, there is a danger that the animal may be subject to inbreeding depression and less likely to perform well. Too far above this level will make the animal an unreliable breeding prospect and also means that fewer useful genes affecting performance might be 'fixed.

Using genetic calculations and taking account of a mares or stallions GhP score allows us to
predict the GhP level of a potential foal, giving the best chances of performance and breeding success."

MD Match
MD Match relates to performance. Dr Stephen Harrison: The test assess the inheritance of a specific DNA component which is likely to have a direct performance role. This component is of paramount importance to a horses performance, as it helps to control energy release within its muscle cells.
                                                 The test determines the DNA variant by a horse and whether it is correct." Further correlation with our databases for pedigree and performance data help to form the basis of breeding recommendations."

Both tests are included within The Thoroughbred Genetics Companys EQ proFILE, a strategy,
which measures crucial genetic variables likely to affect the breeding and racing potential of the horses tested, or their potential progeny.
