Ten Tips for the Best Beaujolais Nouveau Party
1. Beaujolais Nouveau always arrives the third Thursday of November-and Thursday is a great night for a party. After all, some people will actually go to work the next day, so you can get them out at an almost decent hour.
2. This is a party built around a wine. If you dont have them, buy wine glasses. Never, never, never serve wine in plastic glasses. Great glasses can be found cheap at places like Target or Crate & Barrel. Youll need one per guest and a few extras in case of breakage.
3. Send out an invitation- this makes the party official. Email is perfectly fine. You can download the Beaujolais Nouveau label from www.winewithoutrules.com to give your invite some style. Ask people to RSVP, so you dont under or over buy.
4. Dont stress about the food-Beaujolais Nouveau is a wine that goes with almost everything. An assortment of cheeses, hard sausage, good olives, nuts and other finger foods is perfect. If you want to get more elaborate-go for it-but make it easy on yourself so that you can actually be a guest at your own party. Think about purchasing prepared dishes such as Coq au Vin (chicken in red wine sauce) from your local gourmet shop.
5. Clean the apartment the weekend before-then just dont mess it up. This way youre not rushing around during the week trying to scrub soap scum off the bathroom.
6. Get sassy with the décor and match it to the wines label. The label for the 2003 Beaujolais Nouveau from Georges Duboeuf is electric pink, green and orange. Match balloons or flowers to the label-those big gerbera daisies are perfect. Party.com sells Chinese food containers and napkins in these same almost fluorescent tones. A table shot through with that much color just screams party.
7. Music. Its a must. Something upbeat and fun-no dirges please. Music can definitely make or break the party atmosphere.
8. Order the wine ahead of time. By law, Beaujolais Nouveau cannot be sold before November 20 this year, so order your Nouveau from your local wine shop and have them deliver that morning or pick it up on your way home.
9. Order one bottle for every two guests-it may be slightly more than you need-but any leftover will be perfect with the Thanksgiving turkey. Dont pour the glass more than half full-youre supposed to have some head space to appreciate the aromas-which should be very fruity, grapey, berrylike-hey, this stuff was on the vine 10 weeks ago-why shouldnt it taste like grapes. Beaujolais Nouveau is best served chilled-you can stick it on the fire escape, in the refrigerator for 20 minutes, or in an ice bucket for 5. It wont break the bank-expect to pay about $8.99/9.99 per bottle for Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2003. Remember, if you buy a case, ask your wine retailer for a quantity discount.
10. Spill red wine on your white shag carpet? No worries. Blot up the stain with lots of paper towels and use Wine Away-an amazing product that makes the world and carpet safe for red wine lovers everywhere. You can order it on line at www.wineaway.com.
