UPGRADES: New Life for Old Radiology Digitizers
Sugar Land, Texas (PRWEB) November 15, 2003 -- Digitizers designed to produce digital diagnostic images from films have been in service for many years. Often older, high-quality digitizers no longer in use can be upgraded to provide more years of service at a reasonable cost.
Using modern DICOM software and Instant Presence® remote control, engineers at Miner Miracles LTD can quickly install demonstration software on an existing digitizer workstation. Users can test and verify software operation for 30 days before they make the decision to purchase, assuring that the operation is stabile and fits correctly within their workflow. The purchase decision results in the installation of a simple software dongle, and the upgrade is complete.
Eight to twelve years ago, most digitizers were installed to enable teleradiology applications for remote radiologists. Since the international DICOM open standard for medical imaging was in its infancy, a large number of these systems were installed with workstations that utilized proprietary, non-DICOM software to acquire images, provide workflow and image manipulation, and transmit the studies.
In todays world, DICOM is the rule, not the exception. As the vast majority of diagnostic modalities and remote servers use only DICOM to communicate, usage for proprietary software systems is so limited that many are simply shut down or replaced. Users limited by non-DICOM software find they can only communicate with other systems that use the same proprietary format. Most department managers with modern diagnostic equipment, forced to install expensive conversion systems that translate DICOM output to proprietary formats, quickly recognize that they are throwing good money after bad" and begin to replace all non-DICOM systems in their facility.
Other high-quality digitizers use acquisition software that operates poorly or is no longer supported. In some cases, business relations between the facility and the software supplier may have deteriorated, again resulting in equipment that is no longer used.
The digitizer workstation upgrade from Miner Miracles LTD requires the following to succeed:
· Digitizer: Lumisys, Vidar, or CobraScan.
· Broadband Internet connection.
· Workstation functions correctly.
· Workstation can connect to the Internet.
· Workstation can acquire images from the digitizer.
· Facility has the Administrator logon password for the workstation.
· 386+ Pentium, 200+ mHz, Windows NT/2000/XP, 500 MB hard drive space available.
· One free USB or LPT printer port for the software dongle.
Even if a new workstation must be supplied to replace the older one, todays low prices allow the total installed cost to remain very reasonable. With the savings in travel expenses using Instant Presence® remote control, most departments can fund the upgrade with discretionary funds that do not required management approval.
