Wireless Mobile Devices Increasingly Dominating Markets around the World

In 2003, the islands contract manufacturers will produce over seven million PDA units, for about 46% of the worlds shipment, and up from the 4.119 million shipped in 2002. Dominating the market this year are low-end PDAs, with international companies such as Dell, Toshiba and HP having launched models selling for under $299 retail. In 2004, Taiwan manufacturers are expected to ship around nine million PDA units.

While this all sounds like good news for these companies, the global PDA market is going through a transition and it is not yet clear which way things will turn. The market had been expected to grow continuously through 2007, but declined sharply in 2002 and may show a decline again in 2003. While Taiwan makers global share is rising, a shrinking global market is
not encouraging. One of the major reasons for declining PDA sales is the emergence of the smartphone (cell
phones with internet access and organizer functions). The smartphone, otherwise known as the converged mobile device, will have its strongest growth year in 2003. According to IDC, about 13
million smartphones will ship world-wide in 2003, with annual growth of about 86 percent until 2007. Fortunately for Taiwan, most of its major PDA makers are also cell phone makers (or on their way to becoming such), and will benefit either way the market goes.
