A Sexy New Addition to the Sci-fi World

Los Angeles-based writer and sometime model Julia Yang sets out on a mission to shatter the stereotype of science fiction and fantasy gamers as greasy-haired geeks.

If Los Angeles-based writer, web designer, and sometime model Julia Yang has her way, the image of science fiction and fantasy fans and gamers as greasy-haired geeks who can't get a date will soon be a thing of the past. Yang, whose science fantasy novel Cruel Resurrection is nearing completion, shatters all the sci-fi stereotypes, and the pictures on her new website, julia.studiolacquer.com, prove it. In fact, Yang wants to be known as the poster girl for the geek world.

Yang's intellectual credentials fit those of a dedicated geek. During high school, she attended an exclusive mathematics and science academy. Her bookcase holds a collection of novels by J. R. R. Tolkien, Orson Scott Card, Roger Zelazny, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and L. Ron Hubbard, among others. Her idea of a good time involves a bottle of Scotch and a fully-loaded Mac. She considers Japanese video game giant Hironobu Sakaguchi a god among men. Among the DVDs she collects are full collections of Japanese anime television series. She speaks four languages, invented two more for her novel, still laments the cancellation of the Farscape series on the Sci-fi Channel, has read The Lord of the Rings six times, considers her PlayStation 2 the best investment she ever made, and lined up to see The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, The Fellowship of the Rings, and The Two Towers on their opening days.

As she says, however, "All that doesn't mean that I don't also love spike heels and hip-huggers and low-cut tops. It's pretty obvious that geeks rule the world now. We come in all shapes and sizes, including the shapes and sizes that get hit on a lot."

When not writing or reliving the joys of the Final Fantasy RPG series on her Sony PlayStation and PlayStation 2, Yang is a freelance web designer whose design firm, Studio Lacquer, creates websites for writers. She most recently exercised her design skills in creating julia.studiolacquer.com. Her likeness has appeared on the packaging for the Pyramat gaming peripheral devices.
