OUTSTANDING DOUBLE FIRST SUCCESS FOR ELECTRONIC SECURITY COMPANY IN NATIONAL TRAINING AWARDS
Security integration specialist, Pointer, was one of just three Scottish companies winning through to the National Training Awards in London. The awards honour companies and organisations who, in the words of the organiser, UK Skills, "have placed training at the heart of their business strategy". Of the 58 National Award winners at the ceremony in the Guildhall, Pointer was one of just 20 companies to receive a further Special National Training Award in recognition of their exceptional training initiatives.
The National Training Awards have been in existence for 17 years and are widely regarded as the pinnacle of achievement within the training industry. There were over 1000 entrants this year including many of the UK's largest companies. Pointer is in good company, recent winners have included Jaguar Cars, BASF plc, the Royal Bank of Scotland, International Semiconductor and Bombardier Aerospace.
The National Awards were celebrated on Tuesday November 18 at the Guildhall, where Ivan Lewis MP, Under Secretary of State for Education and Skills, was host for the evening. Pointer's Special Award, presented by Joanna Lumley, was sponsored by the Chartered Management Institute and accepted by Hugh Lawson, Pointer's Learning and Development Manager.
Pointer was recognised for its outstanding training programme. This has enabled the company to move from a competitive low-growth area of business to become an international leader in the integration of high-end security systems.
All 161 staff are involved in the training programme. The company was particularly commended for its initiative in developing the National/Scottish Vocational Qualification - Level Three for its own needs and creating the in-house training facility, aptly named Pointer College. These initiatives have made the security industry qualification more relevant to today's technology.
"No other electronic security installer has ever achieved a double success in the National Training Awards and we are delighted for all our staff to have received recognition for their hard work and skills development," commented managing director Sandy Rowan.
The National Training Awards are backed by UK Skills, part of the Department for Education and Skills, the government agency that promotes new skills as an aid to economic development.
