PUT MATHCOUNTS REGISTRATION ON YOUR TO-DO LIST
NEW YORK (Nov. 26, 2003) -- As the holiday season gets into full swing, and 2003 winds down, Mathcounts Manhattan asks you to set your sights on the future -- first Dec. 12, 2003, and then Feb. 7, 2004.
Dec. 12 is the last day schools can register for the Mathcounts Manhattan 2004 competition, which will be held on Feb. 7. Registration forms are available on Mathcounts Web site (www.mathm.org). The competitions aim is to bring together those students who aim to go beyond the minimum academic requirements.
It teaches them a real life lesson," Jeremy Edmunds, Mathcounts Manhattan coordinator, said. Hard work will always yield honest fulfillment."
Students will compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches. Subjects include algebra, probability, statistics and geometry. Winners will advance to the state competition in Albany. All participants will receive day passes to Chelsea Piers.
A total of 65 students from 11 schools -- including School of the Future, United Nations International School, MS54 Booker T. Washington School, Park East Day School, Young Womens Leadership School and Hunter College High School-- took part in last years competition.
Over the past five years, Mathcounts Manhattan has given me the chance to give a little back," Edmunds said. Im proud to be a part of such a great program."
In addition to student scholars, team coaches, exam graders and proctor volunteers are also needed to help run Februarys competition. Sponsors are needed to help fund the program.
Founded in 1983, Mathcounts is a nationwide program that promotes math excellence in middle schools. The program, which has grown to reach more than half a million students, strives to raise the education bar by motivating students interested in improving their math skills in a friendly club environment.
