WEB SITE UPDATED TO ATTRACT MORE 'MATHLETES
NEW YORK (Dec. 1, 2003) -- In an effort to reach even more of New Yorks brightest, Mathcounts Manhattan recently updated and expanded its Web site (www.mathm.org).
The updated site includes information on competitions and involvement opportunities, a list of Mathcounts participating schools, photos of past competitions and links to student resources, the Mathcounts national Web site and Mathcounts Manhattan sponsors. It also allows potential 'Mathletes to download a registration form for the upcoming competition.
Mathcounts Manhattan was started in 1990 by engineer Bill Gross. It has grown to serve 9 percent of the boroughs middle schools. Its current coordinators, Jeremy Edmunds and LaToya Wilcher, hope the updated Web site will draw more young scholars into what has proven to be a terrific program for both those who participate in Mathcounts competitions, and those who run them.
Mathcounts Manhattan is about encouraging kids to go above and beyond the minimum academic requirements," Edmunds said. It teaches them a real life lesson: Hard work will always yield honest fulfillment."
Founded in 1983, Mathcounts is a nationwide program that promotes math excellence in middle schools. The program, which has grown to reach more than half a million students, strives to raise the education bar by motivating students interested in improving their math skills in a friendly club environment.
Local sponsors of last years competition included the New York Chapter of the National Society of Engineers, engineer Al Brand, Chelsea Piers and the Columbia University math department.
