"Harmony for the Holidays": A Musical Journey Home

There's no place like home for the holidays-as long as you're accepted there. In its year-end concert, Harmony: a Colorado chorale will explore the meaning of home in the context of the holidays and the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender (GLTB) community.

"Harmony for the Holidays" will be performed at 3 PM and 8 PM on Saturday, December 13 at Denver's Park Hill United Methodist Church, 5209 Montview at Glencoe. General admission tickets ($15) can be purchased through the Harmony hotline, 303-331-2667; by e-mail at tickets@harmonychorale.org; on line at www.harmonychorale.org; or at the door.

The concert's opening song, "You're Home for the Holidays," sets the theme: Colorado's premier GLTB mixed chorus welcomes everyone into its extended family. "Some of us remember coming out to friends or family at Christmas," says William Loper, Harmony's artistic director since 2002. "Others remember the first holiday we spent with a new partner. Some holiday journeys we recall as being frantic or even painful. Whatever the memories, we hope our audience will feel very much at home with us on this musical journey."

Joining the Harmony family for this concert are guests artists Carolyn Val-Schmidt and Nancy Stevens. Val-Schmidt, a Boulder-based soloist and music instructor, has performed at the Metropolitan Opera and the Juilliard School of Music. In addition to her solo set, Val-Schmidt will join Harmony for a rave-up version of "Jingle Bells." Stevens, from Carbondale, will perform Dar Williams' "The Christians and the Pagans," the story of a holiday that believers of many types can enjoy side by side.

Two other songs by Denver/Boulder composers will be featured:

  • "Never Be Alone," by Damien Krzyzek, a graduate of the University of Denver now pursuing his artist diploma at the Lamont School of Music
  • "Shalom Rav," by Sheldon Sands, whose recordings include Across Many Oceans and Dead Sea Strolls

Also on tap are the Beach Boys' "Little Saint Nick,"; a Brooklynese arrangement of "Winter Wonderland"; Morten Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium"; the medieval German composition "Maria Durch ein Dornwald ging (Maria Walks Amid the Thorn"); "Betelehemu," a Nigerian carol; and the Italian classic "Santa Lucia."

A nonprofit, all-inclusive chorus founded in 1991, Harmony: a Colorado chorale is committed to using the power of music to educate and empower its members and the community at large. From its base in the gay and lesbian community, Harmony's music celebrates difference, effects positive change, and works toward achieving equality for all people.

On May 22, Harmony presents "Letters Home: A Portrait of the '40s." This original production, a mix of period pieces, original songs, and narration, will bring the World War II era and its struggles for equality and human rights to life through the relationship of a radio announcer and a military pilot. The show will be Harmony's first appearance at the June Swaner Gates Concert Hall in the Newman Center for Performing Arts of the University of Denver.
