On Saturday, October 18, 2003, National Martial, martial arts studios in 44 states participated in Project Action's Fifth Annual IKON Kick-A-Thon fundraisier to prevent juvenile crime. Over 3,700 martial arts instructors and students performed 5,842,033 kicks in one hour, raising close to $200,000. The previous world record was set in October 2000 with 4.7 million kicks performed simultaneously nationwide in one hour. Proceeds from these events will provide over 500 "at-risk" children the opportunity to take martial arts classes in the communities in which the funds were raised.
National Martial Arts Day was created jointly by the National Association of Professional Martial Artists (NAPMA) and the Project Action Foundation to call attention to the arts, and the many benefits derived by the several million Americans who are actively participating in martial arts programs across the country. The goal is to increase positive recognition and attract new participants to the martial arts. Governors from across the United States issued proclamations officially declaring October 18, 2003 the Second Annual National Martial Arts Day (visit www.nationalmartialartsday.com to view proclamations). The Third Annual National Martial Arts Day will be Saturday, October 16, 2004.
The Project Action Foundation is a national award-winning children's charity whose mission is to prevent juvenile crime by providing disadvantaged and "at-risk" children the opportunity to become involved in physical and cultural arts programs. Project Action currebtly works with over 3,000 martial arts, dance and gymnastics schools.
