This question has been pondered throughout the ages, but author, Jackie Ashton, believes that she has solved part of that mystery. In her book, The White Swans of Fal, Ms. Ashton relates the story of two souls. It is through these souls that we come to understand one of our purposes on earth.

Elizabeth Harrowsmith and William De Logos are forever bound by a force they do not fully understand. After their untimely deaths in the 15th century, they are reborn in 17th century Ireland as Gillian, the daughter of English nobility, and Fionn, a poor Irish peasant. William and Elizabeth are now confronted with the impossible: reuniting their flesh beings and teaching them the meaning of life.

Awaking from anaesthesia after the birth of her second child in 1980, Ms. Ashton was told that her newborn suffered from Trisomy 18 -- a fatal chromosome disorder. Reeling from the thought of losing her child, her mind sought an escape, so shed clung to a dream shed had during her emergency Caesarean Section.

In my dream, I was a small boy, about six years old; afloat on a raft, in a sea of sand," recalls Ms. Ashton. An ancient, white-bearded man was by my side. This guide explained to me that there are seven questions to the secret of life. Mankind's quest is to answer these questions, as once the questions have been answered successfully, we will cease to exist on this plain. I strained to understand the questions before me -- as they were etched deep into the sand banks on the surrounding hills -- but being so young, I could not yet read."

The White Swans of Fal was written after years of reflection on the dream, research on souls, the mind and how it works, and the Celtic culture. The questions evolved into quests and the basis of the novel. I think people generally understand that they have a purpose to their life, but I dont think they realize that they are also here to perfect their innate human qualities, such as Love, Honesty and Acceptance," states Ms. Ashton, and that we dont just get one chance at it."

Understanding ones life purpose is not always an easy task. The White Swans of Fal helps to illustrate the story through the lives of Elizabeth and William -- Gillian and Fionn.
