The Tennessee Titans opened the week with an opportunity to lead their division for the first time this season. That opportunity was quickly taken away during Monday nights game against the New York Jets. This win is largely attributed to Jets Quarterback Chad Pennington, who threw two touchdown passes in the second half to score a 24-17 victory over Steve McNair and the Titans.
The Jets (5-7) kept their slim playoff hopes alive and handed the Titans (9-3) their first loss in seven games.
"If we can play like this against a good football team, it brings a lot of life back. I felt this week we were going to win this game. I felt this team was going to be ready to play", stated Jets Head Coach Herman Edwards.
Another contributing factor to the Jets win over the Titans was an injury to Titans Quarterback Steve McNair. McNair played in Mondays game despite having a strained right calf, with hopes of helping his team secure sole position of the AFC South; following an Indianapolis loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday. A home field victory against the Colts next week could still claim this position.
McNair finished 21-of-35 for 272 yards with two touchdown passes and two interceptions. He threw an 8-yard scoring pass to Derrick Mason with 1:52 remaining to get the Titans within a touchdown, but Chris Baker recovered the onside kick for the Jets to close out the win.
Pennington, meanwhile, finished 18-of-23 for 231 yards and also had two interceptions for his third win in five starts since returning from a broken left wrist.
