Ductwork Contracts for Channel Tunnel Rail Link

Ventilation ductwork specialist Senior Hargreaves has won two contracts approaching £6 million on the final phase of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL).

(PRWEB) December 4, 2003 -- Hargreaves has won a supply and installation contract with CORBER (Costain, O'Rourke, Bachy Soletenache and Emcor Rail) consortium at the CTRL St Pancras site. The refurbishment and extension of St Pancras is being carried out by CORBER working with Rail Link Engineering (RLE), who are the project manager and designer.

Ventilation work by Hargreaves will include environmental comfort control and emergency smoke exhaust. The scope of this work will cover public areas, administration offices and car parks. Work started on site in November with contracts running until 2006, with the new rail link and facilities will be operational in 2007.

Hargreaves will also carry out ventilation work on the London and Thames tunnels in a further contract with Emcor Rail Ltd, the main contractor for CTRL. This contract includes the provision of standard ventilation and emergency ventilation systems. These special systems are housed in five shafts that link the tunnels to the surface for the London tunnels, St Pancras to Stratford and Stratford to Dagenham, and to portal buildings on each side of the Thames.

The main function of the ventilation systems is to either supply or extract air from the tunnels in the event of incident conditions. Sophisticated computerised control will enable maximum flexibility of use and be able to provide air for passenger comfort in a stationary train and for maintenance work in the tunnels.

At each of the Thames portals, Hargreaves will supply and install systems that will inject large volumes of air through portal ejectors (a Saccardo system.), which will induce airflow through the tunnel.

All of the ventilation fan areas will have integral access platforms gantries and ladders for maintenance. Hargreaves will also be responsible for providing the ventilation systems in the head house buildings at the top of each shaft which house switch and control rooms.

CTRL - Additional information for editors

The £5.2bn Channel Tunnel Rail Link is the first high-speed railway and the first railway to be built in Britain for over a century. Rail Link Engineering is the project manager and designer for the entire CTRL.

Section 1 of the CTRL, the 46 miles between the Channel Tunnel and Fawkham Junction in north Kent was completed on budget and on time for Union Railways (South) Ltd in September 2003. Section 2, the 24 miles from north Kent into London's St Pancras, via new international stations at Stratford in east London and Ebbsfleet in north Kent, began in July 2001 and is now 60 per cent complete. The client for section 2 is Union Railways (North) Ltd, a subsidiary of London and Continental Railways.

Once CTRL is complete, at the beginning of 2007, journey times from central London to the Channel Tunnel will be halved and peak-time capacity doubled. Paris will be around two hours fifteen minutes and Brussels just two hours from St Pancras by Eurostar.

CTRL will also allow Kent commuters to benefit from new high speed domestic services to London and release capacity for extra passengers and freight services to run on existing infrastructure. The new railway will be a catalyst for regeneration, particularly for the Thames Gateway, but also around St Pancras in east London.
