(PRWEB) December 5, 2003 --Research Programme on Arsenic related health effect is being carried out by Dr. D N Guha Mazumder, Professor and Head (Retd.), Dept. of Medicine and Gastroenterology and his team at Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research, Kolkata, Kolkata, India, since 1984. Other research publications of Dr. Guha Mazumder is maintained by DNGM Research Foundation.

Health effect due to chronic drinking of arsenic contaminated ground water was studied on people exposed to 'As' in villages and on patients attending SSKM Hospital, Kolkata, Westbengal, since 1984. Detailed clinical study and investigation carried out on more than 250 cases, revealed that chronic 'As' toxicity produces various non cancer manifestations e.g. chronic lung disease, chronic liver disease, etc. over and above skin manifestations neuropathy and vascular manifestation which were described by other investigators earlier. Epidemiological study carried out on more than 7000 people in one of the affected districts showed that prevalence of skin manifestation was strongly related to water 'As' level.

Efficiency of chelating agents like DMSA and DMPS were also studied on the 'As' exposed people in a double blind placebo controller manner. Natural history of chronic arsenicosis following intake of safe water were also investigated. To understand the biochemical mechanism of lever fibrosis experimental studies were carried out by feeding animals with 'As' contaminated water. Collaborative research with Prof. Allan H. Smith of University of California, Berkeley, USA were are being carried out in nested case control studies on previously studied population and these include low dose exposure and susceptibility factors for skin effect, high dose exposure and respiratory effect and Arsenic exposure and pregnancy out-comes and child development. A list of scientific publications and summaries of the Arsenic study results are provided.
