Our club has worked with Williamsville East High School for some time, especially for the schools annual Thanksgiving food basket project," said George Oliver, president of the Rotary Club of Amherst East. We wanted to provide the students at Williamsville East with the opportunity to participate in Rotary by helping them found their own Interact Club."
The Amherst East Rotary Club meets at noon on Thursdays at Daffodils Restaurant. The Williamsville East Interact Club will develop its meeting schedule in early 2004.
Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through projects, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs. And, in the process, Interactors develop leadership skills and learn the value of hard work.
As one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service, with more than 8,600 Interact clubs in some 110 countries and geographical areas, Interact has become a worldwide phenomenon.
The Williamsville East High School faculty advisor to the Interact Club is Michael Coon, a counselor at the high school. The founding officers are president Jason Scheff, vice-president Steve Brooks, secretary Ashley Kotz, and treasurer Adam Korn. In addition, Colin Kelley, Torrie Haenzel, Amanda Kotz, Brad Steinwachs, and Elizabeth Komroy, are founding members.
We are very excited to be in partnership with the East Amherst Rotary Club. Their presence within our school community will model for our students that volunteerism and being of service to others is a life-long commitment" said Mike Coon.
