A Look at One Authors Quest to Publish
With the launch of her online diary detailing the day-to-day experiences of her quest to publish her novel, Julia Yang gives aspiring novelists a fresh resource about the publishing industry.
With the recent launch of her online publication diary at julia.studiolacquer.com, Los Angeles-based writer Julia Yang gives other aspiring novelists a personal and in-depth look at the novel submission process. Yang created her online diary, The Making of an Author," for her fellow scribes: I wanted to make a documentary-style journal that would show my experiences as they happen -- as a writer, I know how valuable learning from others successes and failures is. Its a lot faster and easier than groping about blindly. And everyone loves an American Idol-style peek behind the industry scenes."
Currently, The Making of an Author" depicts Yangs search for an agent, from her initial research to her preparation and submission of initial proposal packages. Although, as Yang says, I cant divulge names or quote any correspondence I receive, I can still paint a detailed picture of what Im going through." For her fellow writers, she also includes lists of market guides and how-to books and adds notes about proper formatting and protocol. I want to demystify the whole process," Yang says. There are so many myths and misconceptions floating around out there, its easy for writers to trip up, and most of us wont get anywhere flailing around in the dark. I did my research, and I hope what I have to say can help other writers, even if just because theyre learning from my mistakes and why I get rejected. Writings a lonely business. We all need to hear each others voices."
Yang has been writing for over a decade, has been studying the publishing industry and process for two years, and recently completed the final draft of her science fantasy epic, Cruel Resurrection, the subject of The Making of an Author." She is also a web designer and freelance editor.
