Were excited about doing something that is going to benefit those affected by HIV/AIDS. Knowing that orchestrating an event for such a worthy cause will provide assistance to those affected by the virus, makes us that much prouder of our contribution through our first of many charity fashion shows."

About AIDS Project Los Angeles and The Assistance Fund

AIDS Project Los Angeles, one of the nation's largest AIDS service organizations, provides direct services to more than 10,000 men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS in Los Angeles County. Services include prevention education, a food bank, and professional dental care, housing assistance, mental health counseling, women's services and case management. APLA is a leader in the provision of bilingual HIV treatment information, in print and on the Internet, and advocates for effective AIDS-related policies and legislation on the local, state and federal level.

AIDS Project Los Angeles was founded in 1982, when a dedicated group of people saw their friends becoming sick and wanted to do something to help. While in the beginning APLA's client base consisted almost entirely of gay or bisexual men, in recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of Latino, African-American and female clients. APLA offers its services to more than 8,000 men, women and children living with AIDS. The agency is administered by a professional staff of over 175 and supported by a voluntee force of more than 2,000 volunteers. 70% of APLA's annual budget is raised through donations from individuals, corporatios, foundations and special events. The remaining 30% is from government grants and contracts.

In addition to our commitment to keep fundraising cost low, 70 cents of every dollar of AIDS Project Los Angeles raises goes directly to client services, HIV prevention and treatment education and advocacy on behalf of persons with HIV/AIDS. Only 5% is spent on administrative costs.

The Assistance Fund (TAF) provides much needed support to individuals living with AIDS by paying their health insurance premiums until they qualify for Medicare, and by offering financial assistance for the purchase of medication. Those we help have reached a point in their disease process where work is no longer possible and available financial resources are inadequate to maintain quality of life, dignity and peace of mind. Clients of The Assistance Fund are carefully guided through the application process on site at our office in Houston. The intensity for fundraising activities and seeking new grant opportunities, by necessity, continues to be a strong focus for The Assistance Fund as the disease spreads through minority communities at a disproportionate rate.

The Assistance Fund services the geographic area in Texas that includes Harris, Austin, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Liberty, Montgomery, Waller, Walker and Wharton Counties.
