HEINZ CENTER ELECTS DAVID J. REFKIN TO BOARD

The Heinz Center announced that David J. Refkin, President of TI Paperco, the paper-purchasing subsidiary of Time Inc., has been elected to the Centers Board of Trustees.

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) December 12, 2003 --The Heinz Center announced that David J. Refkin, President of TI Paperco, the paper-purchasing subsidiary of Time Inc., has been elected to the Centers Board of Trustees.

Mr. Refkin is responsible for all environmental and sustainability activities of Time Inc. Upon learning of his election, he said, I am thrilled to become a member of the Board of Trustees of The Heinz Center. The mission and goals of the Center closely mirror our efforts at Time Inc. to incorporate environmental performance and leadership into our purchasing model. I look forward to contributing to the unique and innovative approach that The Heinz Center takes to integrating science and economics to help find solutions to challenging environmental issues."

G. William Miller, chair of the Heinz Centers Board, welcomed Mr. Refkin, saying: David Refkin brings to the Board a strong, enthusiastic, and effective commitment to environmental issues. He has led industry in making changes in practice that protect and restore forests and streams, and that experience will be invaluable to the Center."

Thomas E. Lovejoy, the Heinz Centers president and a member of the Board of Trustees, said, I have been an admirer of Mr. Refkins for some time-his success and leadership with the paper industry has been inspiring and represents just the practical approach that The Heinz Center embraces. I am looking forward to working with him as the Center comes to grips with the environmental challenges and opportunities of today and tomorrow."

   As president of TI Paperco Inc., Mr. Refkin is responsible for purchasing the paper for the 135 Time Inc. magazines worldwide and for Time Inc.s eight book companies, as well as for supplying the paper needs of other Time Warner divisions. Time Inc. is the worlds largest user of coated paper. Mr. Refkin is also responsible for the environmental and sustainability activities of Time Inc. He is active in the Certified Sustainable Forestry (CSF) Initiative, the goal of which is to dramatically increase the amount of certified paper purchased by TI Paperco. Mr. Refkin was Time Inc.s representative on the Paper Task Force, a group organized by the Environmental Defense Fund, and was one of the authors of the task forces Recommendations for Purchasing and Using Environmentally Preferable Paper." Mr. Refkin is a former chairman of the Magazine Publishers of America Paper Committee and of its Environment Committee.

Following a short career in public accounting, Mr. Refkin joined Time Inc. in 1982 in corporate finance. Mr. Refkin became a member of the production division in 1986 as its Business Manager. He was named the Assistant Director of Paper Purchasing in May 1989, Director of Paper and Environmental Affairs in January 1995, and President of TI Paperco Inc. in January 2001.

A native of New York City, Mr. Refkin, a CPA, has a B.S. degree in Accounting from the State University of New York at Albany and a Masters in Business Administration degree in Finance from Iona College; he also attended the Strategic Environmental Management Program at New York University.

The Heinz Center, established in 1995 in memory of Senator John Heinz, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan institution dedicated to improving the scientific and economic basis for environmental policy and to developing innovative solutions to environmental problems.
