Local Author Published In Book Promoting Literacy Among Children and Adults! The Writersville Charity Cookbook: Recipes to Benefit Literacy Worldwide
Over 20 authors work together to share heartfelt stories and recipes in hopes of promoting literacy nationwide.
(PRWEB) December 16, 2003 --According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, 32% of the American population read at an 8th grade level and according to the National Adult Literacy Survey, 42 million adults in Americans can't even read. Those are some pretty shocking numbers! But with the help of authors like Alyice Edrich, of Merrill Wisconsin, the Writersville Gang, and the ProLiteracy Worldwide Campaign things are about to change!
After being asked to join a cause that would spread the word about literacy through reading, recipes, and royalties, Edrich gladly sat down to share her story. When I heard about this project, I couldnt pass up the opportunity to help fund literacy campaigns worldwide,” says Edrich. In her story, she shared a very touching essay about her daughter—an 8 year old girl who loved books, but had a difficult time learning to read. She shared how her daughters mission of promoting childrens authors through book reviews not only helped improve her reading, but encouraged her daughter to try harder. She followed the essay up with a simple recipe any child could tackle. Two months later, her story and recipe were accepted and Project Literacy began.
Im a freelance writer,” Edrich proclaims. Ands still, I couldnt help my daughter with her reading problem. I did everything humanly possible to help my daughter tackle her reading problem, including working with her teachers and signing her up for a special state-funded reading program. Sometimes, illiteracy has nothing to do with not wanting to read, but more to do with not understanding the concepts involved in putting words together. Reading programs are essential in helping not only our children, but the millions of adults facing the same problems.”
The original idea behind this project is credited to Dorothy Thompson and Tricia Draper, who single-handedly located authors willing to share their stories, recipes, and book royalties. These two women continued their mission until they found a publisher willing to help the cause by not only publishing the book for free, but donating any profits received from the sale of said book! Thanks to PageFree Publishing, Project Literacy has hit bookstores nationwide.
I can truly say this is the most worthwhile project we have ever worked on,” says Thompson. Illiteracy can be obliterated and if we take one small step, we are only one step closer to becoming totally literate.”
