(PRWEB) December 20, 2003 --Work by a local artist has been chosen from over 1500 entries to exhibit at a prestigious new exhibition in central London. `Originals 04, The Contemporary Printmaking Show', has been launched in place of the popular National Print Exhibition and will take place from 8 to 28 February 2004 at the Mall Galleries. The exhibition will cover a wide range of contemporary printmaking media and styles.
Printmaking has historically been misconceived as the poor relation within the art firmament. Originals 04 intends to set the record straight. Since `printing' is such a nebulous term it is important to make some clear distinctions between what is deemed to be an `original' print and that which is a `reproduction'. The former indicates a work of art conceived in its own right, produced in a limited batch and signed by the artist personally. The latter on the other hand, is a cheap `poster' imitation, using photographic or digital techniques to recreate the image in almost infinite numbers. One is art, the other is copy.
As a result of these misconceptions, many prospective buyers of what is truly an outstanding art form are put off through ignorance. Few understand the true dedication and skill required to produce an original print. Few understand an original print's true investment potential. If any collector has a keen eye for up and coming artistic talent, that same print bought for a bargain could, in a few years, be worth many times more.
In order to secure an exhibition of excellent quality and diversity a new judging panel has been formed of well-known and influential collectors, dealers and artists namely: Deborah Roslund (collector) chair, Angela Flowers (collector and gallery owner), Paul Hooper (Galleries Magazine), Peter Ford (artist and gallery owner), Anita Klein (artist), Christopher Le Brun, (artist), Stephen Mumberson (lecturer and artist), Sheila Sloss (artist), Simon Whittle (artist).
"Our goal is to enthuse, educate and to spread the word: Prints are a viable art form, worthy of gracing anyone's walls just as any painting might claim to. And let's not forget that many of the greats - from Degas to Picasso, Hockney to Munch, and more recently Hirst to Emin - have been dedicated print-makers in their own right!" says Deborah Roslund , Chair of Selection Panel
Prices at Originals 04 are likely to start from 100. A series of workshops on print techniques have been organised in conjunction with the show
