New York has been shoveling money into its prison system to house prisoners of the war on drugs for over 30 years. Many states followed in creating mandatory minimums of their own in hopes of stopping the flow of drugs within their communities. However, today there are more drugs on the streets and they are more potent then they were 30 years ago. Tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars have been wasted on persecuting non-violent drug offenders for 15 years to life or more- All of which are low level drug users and non-violent offenders. Should we have chosen to treat this group of marginalized people as a health issue perhaps our country would not have become the prison state in which we live.
This documentary addresses the re-entry process and the difficulties that formerly incarcerated people needlessly face.
