Justice sadly passed away in Loma Linda California earlier this year. Many residents of Merizo have complained about this bill while many residents of Umatac, the neighbor village of Merizo, have expressed putting the playground there. Currently the Twenty-Seventh Guam Legislature has yet to take action on the bill although Senator Lou Leon Guerrero (D) has expressed interest in introducing such a measure.
(PRWEB) December 21, 2003 --On September 27, 2003 the Twenty-Fourth Guam Youth Congress held session. On that day Substitute Bill 15 (COR) was unanimously passed by the 24th Guam Youth Congress. Substitute Bill 15 (COR) authored by Representative Andrew Dames and co-sponsored by Speaker Jason Tedtaotao and Representative Sandie Avilez would honor Justice Josephine G. Taitague by naming the playground next to the Merizo Pier Park the Justice Josephine G. Taitague Memorial Playground". Two public hearing were held on this bill, one at the Public Hearing Room in the Guam Legislature and one at the Merizo Mayors Office. The original Bill 15 (COR) would rename the Merizo Pier Park itself but after the two public hearings, The Committee on Youth & Senior Citizens, Public Health and Sports & Recreation of the Twenty-Fourth Guam Youth Congress concluded that the renaming the playground and not the park would be most appropriate. Justice Josephine G. Taitague was the 5 year old Merizo girl who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. She spurred the first ever bone marrow drive on Guam. The unity and love of Guam was shown through the Drive for Justice" and because of Justice many lives will be saved. Justice sadly passed away in Loma Linda California earlier this year. Representative Dames states that The love that was shown on our island for Justice should not be forgotten." Many came out to the public hearings to show full support of the bill. Mayor Tony Quinata of Umatac rised in full support of the bill as well as Dr. Thomas Shieh. The Guam Medical Society expressed its full support to this bill. The bill now lies in the hands of the Twenty-Seventh Guam Legislature. The village of Umatac has expressed great interest in having the playground located in their village. This is the first 24th Guam Youth Congress bill to receive attention from the 27th Guam Legislature.
